My Interview in Bella NYC Magazine: Queen of the Runway

Not only are you a preeminent fashion model, but you also have your own line in addition to being a HuffPo columnist. Do you think the modern woman working in fashion, whether journalism, design, styling or modeling, needs to be multifaceted? In today’s world to be a working woman in the fashion industry you must be multifaceted. I started to model at a very young age and I began to realize that you cannot model forever. Also I grew up in the age of multi-talented supermodels such as Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum who really inspired me to think “outside of the (modeling) box”. I like to call them “model moguls” and I hope to be in their position someday. The best thing about fashion is that it is a career with many different facets which gives women so many opportunities to branch out and become involved in different aspects. You’re on record as saying that you want to model your career after the positive aspects of Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton and the way in which they successfully created and grew their careers. What is it about those women that makes them stand apart from other celebrity fashion or lifestyle brands? What I see in Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton that I admire is their staying power. Many times “of-the-minute” celebrities will try to get the most out of their 15 minutes of fame by creating a perfume, designing a clothing & shoe line, writing a book, etc. but then no one hears anything about them the following year. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton have both remained relevant in our society for almost 10 years which is like an eternity in Hollywood. There are not many celebrities that you can think of who have endured the test of time. In the past I have been compared to both women and I feel that it is an honor. Of course we all make mistakes but these women have transitioned from their mistakes turning themselves into billion dollar empires. I find that very admirable. As mentioned, you are a multi-talented fashionista. How do you find balance in your life, and what tips do you have for those looking for balance in their own lives? To me, balance is all about organization. If your life is organized then it’s easy to find balance throughout your day. It’s important to set time aside each day for yourself and to reflect on all what is going on around you. I always make sure to do one thing a day for myself. Whether it be something small like to watch a favorite TV show on my DVR or big to buy myself something I’ve had my eye on, it’s necessary in feeling balanced. This is especially true if you work for someone else or for a large company. Having something to look forward to each day will make your life worth living or else you will just feel like you are living your life for others and going through the motions. You should never feel selfish for living the life you want to lead.

What is one of your must-have items in your beauty ritual? What must you take with you in your travel kit? This is such a hard question for me because I am a complete beauty junkie! I have numerous routines and rituals that I do but on the daily, I always cleanse, tone, treat, and prevent with my La Curcio Collection Skin Care set (http://www.lacurcio.com). If I had to chose just one item it would be my very own Jaimie Hilfiger Collection for La Curcio Heavenly Fragrant Hydrating Mist with Essential Minerals including GOLD & PLATINUM (available soon at http://www.lacurcio.com). The reason being is because it has many uses, such as a hydrating mist, makeup setting spray, and who doesn’t love spraying gold and platinum on themselves! My travel kit would include the items that will be in my capsule collection for La Curcio. For our capsule collection, it will include my luxury favorites in vanity/purse sizes for home and on the go! The products will include: * Heavenly Fragrant Hydrating Mist with Essential Minerals including GOLD & PLATINUM. (It is also perfect for setting makeup) * Luscious Hand Cream with Collagen Boosting & Wrinkle Reducing Vitamin D. * Instant Lip Volumizer & Moisturizing Balm for Softer and up to Visibly 40% Fuller & More Defined Lips. Perfect alone or under Lipstick. The best part about these products is that they are: *All Skin Types *No Artificial Fragrance. *No Artificial Dyes. *Paraben, Sulfate, Phthalate, and Gluten Free. *Recyclable Containers. *Cruelty Free. *Made in USA Accessories can make or break an outfit. How do you best accessorize work wear and how do you best accessorize for a night out on the town? Accessorizing is definitely important when pulling a sophisticated outfit together weather it be for work or a night out on the town. Putting together accessories for the workplace definitely calls for a delicate hand. It’s important not to overdue it for a day at the office. You need to find the right mix of refined pieces so you won’t look like you are going out to a nightclub. Smaller pieces work very well for the office. Think stud earrings, thin bangles, and a classic watch. Also a nice high-end belt always works well too. For a night out on the town, your accessories can add the finishing touch to your look and help you to really stand our amongst the crowd. I have always felt that a party/cocktail ring is a must have and allows you to wear other accessories with ease. Nighttime is the perfect time to embrace jewelry trends like statement necklaces, layering bracelets, and oversized watches. I always like to wear my most glamorous jewelry pieces with sky high stilettos and carry a small purse or clutch with a lot of hardware on it. I’m one of those people who believes it’s better to be overdressed then underdressed…at least for a night out anyway. Speaking of which, can you give us a little detail about your collaboration with Tanus Designs? My latest project has been my collaboration with Tanus Designs. Would you rather design pieces for a show, or model them on the runway? I would want to design the pieces and choose models to showcase my designs on the runway. I think it’s important to know your role in life and distribute the opportunities to people better fit for the job (i.e runway models). Now for the print ads and advertising I would appear as myself in them and not chose nameless models. I have found that celebrity companies have the most success when the celebrity designer is also the brand ambassador. I also find it so rewarding to be proud enough of my own designs to actually wear them as well. As a successful young woman with an already impressive list of achievements to your name, what advice would you give to those women trying to create a place for themselves in this modern and competitive environment? My advice is to specifically find something that you are really interested in and start with that. Once you successfully find your niche, then you can branch out into other areas within your field (similar to what I did with modeling and then breaking into the fashion world with designing and writing). Today’s society is extremely competitive so it’s important to never give up on your dreams if it’s something that you truly believe in and want to accomplish. I’ve encountered so many roadblocks along the way but looking back at them it’s really made me stronger and smarter. Sometimes it’s a good thing to be underestimated and to prove people wrong.
