Jaimie Hilfiger is a young lady hard at work. With dreams of a reality TV hit and several product lines, soon, her uncle Tommy may be asking her for a job. You’ve talked about creating a reality TV show. Given that we’re faced with a million of them now, how will yours be different? What kind of TV network do you hope to land? I agree, over the last few years we have been flooded with so many reality shows that nowadays the most outrageous and craziest shows are the most successful. I don’t believe in not being yourself or putting on a show for TV unless you are on a scripted show. I also don’t believe in crafting stories to make episodes more interesting. If you have to invent stories then you shouldn’t be on TV. Audiences are intelligent and see a made-up story a mile away. The reason why it has taken me so long to have my own reality show is because I was waiting for the point in my life where I have many different projects in the works and when I felt most settled. That’s what will make my show different from the others. It will be unique and organic because my actual life is so intense and involved that nothing will have to be scripted or fabricated. I have a number of big projects in the works at the moment and have recently relocated to Miami Beach, so there is never a dull moment. I would be more than honored to be on the E! network, Bravo or Oxygen – networks that promote women and their ideals and ventures. All of the articles about you ask about “what’s it like being related” to your uncle as if he were from another planet. Old news: we all know every fashion designer but Michael Kors is from Mars, anyway! 😉 I instead want to ask, have you ever worked with him, and what did you learn from him growing his business that you’ll use in your own career. The best thing about my family is that I have so many creative uncles, aunts, and parents (my father and Tommy are two of nine children), so I have learned so much from each one of them. All of my family members on the Hilfiger side are creative in their own certain way. My dad is a masonry contractor who built the new Yankee Stadium and has created many intricate stone designs. I have other uncles and cousins who are musicians and songwriters and aunts who also have their own fashion labels as well. In college, I was lucky enough to have an internship one summer at the Tommy Hilfiger NYC Showroom. I worked in a division called the “Corporate Closet” that housed all of the Tommy Archives from the start of the company (1985). It was such an intriguing experience to see how the company grew in their designs from corporate business wear in the 1980s, to the hip-hop era in the 90s and contemporary chic in the 2000s. I learned a lot about design and style that summer. One piece of advice that Tommy once gave me is to never give up on my dreams. He told me that the industry that I was trying to break into is a tough one and that many people give up. My uncle told me that if it was something that I really wanted to keep pursuing my dreams because one day it will pay off, and it did. Likewise, they mainly ask you about fashion tidbits and healthy eating, but I know there’s more to you! Tell us what else is amazing about the side the press doesn’t ask you about: your silly, fun personality tidbits AND the intellectual half too. I’m a Virgo and I am a really neat and organizational person by nature, but I take it to the extreme. If something if out of order, it messes up my day. I am an extreme perfectionist and I like to help my friends and family members with my organizational skills and habits. It sounds silly, but I love to organize. How exactly did the company you’ve worked with, Tanus Designs, meet you on Twitter? What happened business-wise after the initial Tweet? Having the last name Hilfiger and coming from such an influential fashion family I am contacted all day, everyday, from companies wanting to collaborate and/or work with me. When Tanus Designs contacted me I felt an immediate connection to the company. Their website was clean, organized, and easy to navigate and featured some of the most stunning and affordable jewelry designs that I had ever seen. It’s important to have stylish accessories no matter what your budget is so I decided to work on a collaboration with them. Immediately, I knew the CEO, Brenda Tanus and I were on the same page design wise, so after the initial startup, everything went really fast and smooth. We just launched our first collection titled, GLAMLUXE that launched on September 19. It features a gorgeous cuff bracelet and earrings. A necklace will be introduced in mid-October, this month. So far the response has been extraordinary which makes me feel amazing since this was my first experience designing jewelry.
Can you tell us more about the process of getting involved with another company, La Curcio, and the products you’ll be having? Fashion is in my blood and my first love, but beauty comes in as a close second. Ever since I was young, I have loved cosmetics and beauty products. I was introduced to Jacki Curcio, founder of La Curcio, through a mutual friend and we had an immediate connection and of course shared a love of beauty and skincare products. When Jacki approached me about starting a capsule collection together, I was so honored to add my name to an already established high-end skincare line. I was also just named the Face and Beauty Ambassador of La Curcio Collection. For our capsule collection, it will include my luxury favorites in vanity/purse sizes for home and on the go. Big dreams? In the future, I plan to have a luxury clothing line that is sold at major high-end department stores like Bergdorfs, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, etc. It would be an ultimate dream one day to walk into Bergdorf Goodman, my favorite store, and see my collection. I would also love to have a signature fragrance, luxury handbag line and a diamond collection. OK, because I’ve held you so long without talking about your beloved fashion, let’s give it a go. What’s the most annoying fashion trend you hate and the one you hope sticks around? A fashion “trend” that I personally cannot stand is the mixing and matching of patterns. It just doesn’t look good. I think whichever season it was, fashion editors were at a loss for ideas and proclaimed that mixing patterns was in style. There is not one person, famous or not, who can make this trend look good. There is no way that mixing a floral top with plaid shorts can look good. It drives me crazy when I see mature “Fashionistas” on Instagram trying to make this look work. It doesn’t work for you and it doesn’t work for the models in the fashion spreads of Vogue and ELLE. A trend that I hope sticks around is glamours, embellished evening wear. If I were to choose one word to describe my personal style it would be “glamourous,” so I love to see glamourous trends hit the runways at Fashion Week. Surprisingly enough, luxe, glamour, or sequined wear is usually always in style for winter and usually makes an appearance for spring too. It makes me feel good, but in style or not, I will always be a glamour girl. It’s important not to be a slave to trends, but to always be aware of them. Forget them entirely if they don’t look good on you.
